ABSTRACT

The Liverpool Jazz stereotype is easy to decipher; here is perhaps the latest published version from David Fishel, pianist at the Liverpool Jazz Club. Student jazz is another area that is seldom discussed in a consideration of authenticity around Liverpool, perhaps because in the post-World War II era most students at the University of Liverpool were not ordinarily locals to the area, but more often than not imports from the leafy lanes of middle England. The Cavern gave first focal point for jazz in the city, and it was here that the gifted amateur jazzman first came into contact with the professional dance musicians who played at, the Grafton or Reece's for a living, but liked to play jazz for kicks. Robert Hewison asserts that the 1950s are a central period in the history of publicity and media in the United Kingdom.
