ABSTRACT

At the core of this book is the idea of a spatial matrix formed by space, place and territory, and that this matrix is an intellectual tool for under - standing how persons or social groups shape and are shaped by spatial features. Space is defined as the arrangement of entities (natural and man-made) and flows (material and immaterial) screened by sensorial and cultural filters. Place and territory are portions of space imbued with personal and social values. While the former is centripetal, amalgam - ating values projected onto a portion of space, the latter is centrifugal, with values intended to influence everyone and everything within its range.
