ABSTRACT

The terminology “sustainability” is a loose term widely used in academia as well as in governments and international organizations. While there is controversy regarding its definition, it is generally admitted that it has become one of the most popular terms used in international politics. Its comparable term is “sustainable development” which is more concrete and relatively easier to explain. However, the above two terms are usually interchangeably used. This paper attempts to discuss the concept or principle of sustainable development from a legal perspective and to examine its possible applicability to the sound management of natural resources in the South China Sea.
