ABSTRACT

The work of local boards has been exacting but it has been faithfully executed. The consummation of the patriotic service, however, be the prompt and complete mobilization of the national army. Curious eyes are directed toward the City of New York, and active minds are wondering what will happen. The process of enacting the draft in the city extended the process of Americanisation directly into the lives of the inhabitants of New York. The Selective Service Act demanded that a direct and visible commitment to the values of the nation was to be made both by individual men in registering for the draft, but also their communities in the metropolis in supporting the mobilisation. The Selective Service Act carried a far greater organisational effect on New York City than any other part of the United States. The legislation called for the creation of draft boards within local areas where eligible recruits would register for service.
