ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the determinants of spatial shopping behaviour. It focuses on the Cairngorms National Park (CNP) population using secondary data and questionnaires. The CNP is one of the most sparsely populated parts of the United Kingdom and is currently home to some 17,200 individuals. The Park's population is on average older than elsewhere in Scotland, and continued ageing creates both challenges and opportunities for providers of public and private services. Matching is a technique that is often used in combination with MSM. However, usually this is used in the combination with dynamic models, where actors change over the years. The microsimulation (MSM) techniques we used were developed by Robin Lovelace and Dimitris Balllas from Sheffield University. An often recognized disadvantage of iterative proportional fitting (IPF) techniques is the non-integer weights. The ADMAR dataset only includes information about the head of household and the CNP data tells us the total number of persons with a job.
