ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the theory and practices of intermedial performance, as the basis of and starting point for one perspective on mobile media performance (MMP). MMP is the use of a mobile device as not only the medium and tool within performance, but as performer itself or collaborator, MMP is a subset of intermediality, which is embodied within the artworks. The chapter provides participatory performance and intermediality, and MMP as a subset of it, and explains various mobile modalities used in performance, such as telematic or networked performance, to wearables and smart/e-textiles, mobile video performance and augmented/virtual/mixed reality. It explores how performative mobile video work evolved. The chapter focuses on video performance, thus it stems from the video art and cinema traditions, and is related to live laptop music performance, the relevance of which will become apparent with the selected works.
