ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on networks across organisational theory, management, public administration, criminological and security studies. The organisational networks literature was organised in two categories: network analysis' and network organisations'. The network analysis perspective mostly uses the methods of social network analysis to study what are essentially defined' social networks. The importance of social network research is in its capacity to analyse the implications of networks for individuals and organisations. The concepts of netwar' and counter-netwar' are closely related to the concepts of terrorism' and counter-terrorism'. There is an extensive body of literature that focuses on recent developments in the field of terrorism. While much of this literature mostly promotes the importance of networks, the theory of netwar and counter-netwar provides useful propositions concerning the dynamics and effectiveness of networks. The review provides the basis for developing a methodological framework that is more capable of representing the dynamics of networks and the conditions shaping their effectiveness.
