ABSTRACT

Nadia Boulanger's reputation as one of the greatest music teachers of the twentieth century is secure, surprisingly little is known about her approach to teaching and the content of her classes. The third principal group women who sought a career as music teachers often considered Nadia Boulanger as a role model. The Conservatoire Americain was founded by the American Walter Damrosch, a conductor and the president of the American Friends of Musicians in France, an organization founded during the First World War. We have already seen that during the First World War, both Nadia and Lili Boulanger had been involved with charities concerned with Franco-American relations, and Nadia Boulanger played in several benefit concerts organized by Damrosch. David Diamond, in a letter to Roger Sessions and his wife written from Fontainebleau on 12 July 1937, goes into more detail about the content of his sessions with Boulanger.
