ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses by giving some broad context on the current use of digital technologies in wider society and conceptions of its relationship with pedagogy. It explores some observations about uses of technology in museums and in higher education's (HE), and draw out some implications for considering the particular needs of design students. This is a huge and ever evolving area, and so as a starting point for a discussion of how technology can support design student's learning in museums. The chapter discusses two comments. The first is from art historian Tim Benton, quoted in Anderson: Benton's comment raises many points relevant to a discussion of technology as a support for design student's learning in museums. The second comment is from design tutor Richard Doust: Here, Doust concernes with patterns of technology use outside the museum, rather than with the ways in which technology supports learning inside the museum.
