ABSTRACT

This chapter explains both museums and the higher education (HE) sectors around the subjects of student support and collaborative working; much of this was taking place in the context of isolated projects. It draws together some of these projects, and places them in the wider context of other research and teaching experiments they have encountered. The chapter outlines some of the issues museums and universities face when trying to work collaboratively. Recent thinking by the UK government on the delivery of cultural policy and strategy has acknowledged the important role that museums occupy in supporting and enhancing cultural provision both regionally and nationally. The overlaps and differences between HE and museum pedagogy, and what the two can learn from each other, are also discussed and are an important aspect of this collaboration. The creative and cultural industries are now viewed as vital for stimulating strategic growth and innovation in collaboration with Higher and Further Education.
