ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter explores some of the emerging issues and challenges facing contemporary lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their propensity (or not) to live in multigenerational households. Despite extensive research on heteronormative multigenerational families, LGBT multigenerational families represent a significant gap in current knowledge. In this chapter, we seek to address this gap by exploring what little is currently known about multigenerational LGBT families and by drawing on the existing research on LGBT families more generally to provide insight into the potential experiences and unique needs of multigenerational LGBT families. We use the term ‘multigenerational LGBT families’ broadly throughout this chapter to refer to families with at least two generations of adult family members living together, with at least one member who identifies as LGBT.
