ABSTRACT

The relationship between an individual’s identity and the ways in which wider society and social structure affect identity is a significant and intricate one. This has been illustrated by many social science theorists. According to the findings presented in this book family, peers and friends, the community, proficiency of a language and cultural knowledge and physical appearance were all important in identity construction. In particular this chapter elaborates on religion and how it influenced the young people. By presenting both the qualitative and quantitative research findings, the chapter will examine how interethnic children and adolescents negotiate these challenges and how these issues affected their identities.
