James Marshall discovered gold in California at Sutter’s Mill (present-day Coloma) on 24 January 1848 but slow communications meant that the news took over eight months to reach Britain. There, on 10 October a newspaper report announced that a frenzied rush had seen three-quarters of the population desert San Francisco for the diggings on the Sacramento River.2
