ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the letters of Hanmer Warrington to Lord Bathurst and to Major Alexander Gordon Laing. Hanmer Warrington wrote the letter to Sultan Bello of Sokoto because it was believed that the Niger flowed close to the Fulani capital, and was therefore likely to be visited by Gordon Laing on his intended voyage down the Niger from Timbuktu to the river's mouth. Sheik Babani told Laing that the journey took 66 days which meant travelling 20 miles a day. Babany seems firm in his opinion, as to the certainty of the mission being well received and attended with every success. Altho' Sheikh Babany had not arrived forty eight hours before, He offered in Ten days to leave this for Tombuctoo, but on the Bashaw saying He should only give him Six, it was so arranged. Major Laing will see Hateeta at Godames & will use his own discretion the distance which he will require Hateeta to accompany him.
