Luigi Dallapiccola explains how his writing in the Cinque canti addresses 'frequent elimination of the "tempo forte" of the beat, which leads to a wider-ranging and freer style'. In France, too, the 1936 appeal for a new 'sincerity, generosity and artistic conscientiousness' contained in the manifesto of the group La Jeune France, of which Olivier Messiaen was a founding member, sharply distanced itself from neoclassical formalism. In Italy, the prevailing taste in music during the 1930s can be clearly understood from the programming of the Festival Internazionale di Musica in Venice. During this period, the influential Venetian meeting had several times turned to French musicians, whose music revealed a deep-seated neoclassical orientation.
