ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the various types of infrastructural projects that were initiated in Durban for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and assesses their legacy implications. This includes the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the King Shaka International Airport (KSIA), and the upgrade of the beachfront. A key issue was sustainability, especially in the case of the Moses Mabhida Stadium. A damning indictment against city officials was their failure to consult and accommodate the needs of rugby and cricket before the stadium was designed. In terms of the challenges facing KSIA there is a need for more international flights. The beachfront upgrading had displaced subsistence fishermen and informal traders. Threats to destroy the Warwick market also undermined the livelihoods of street traders. Civil society organizations protested about the extravagant expenditure of public funds against the background of widespread poverty and increasing socio-economic inequalities.
