ABSTRACT

The relationship of communities to the mega-events hosted by their cities is influenced by the political, economic, social and cultural conditions which those communities experience in normal circumstances. This is heightened by the effects – positive and negative, planned and unexpected, tangible and intangible – of living in close proximity to large scale public and commercial projects. Large scale projects such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games bring with them accelerated change requiring major investment not just in sporting infrastructure but transport, security, tourism and hospitality facilities, housing and environmental development.
