ABSTRACT

In February 2009, in the studio with regular presenters of The One Show was Robert Winston, Professor of Reproductive Biology, member of the House of Lords and media celebrity in his own right. 1 From an Orthodox Jewish background, Winston was known for being a scientist open to religion. He had in fact presented a television series, The Story of God, some years before. 2 Asked to consider why people were too embarrassed to talk about God, Winston mentioned the bad press religion got from scientists, and named Richard Dawkins – whom he purported to admire – as one of the principal culprits. Dawkins’s book, The God Delusion, was an outrageous and arrogant affront to religious believers, he said: science itself is just ‘a version of the truth’, not the truth itself.
