ABSTRACT

Interactions between humans and computer based technologies have increased to a great degree as a result of a constant demand for improved efficiency and safety. Simplifying tasks and cost reductions have been the main incentives for implementing automated systems (Parasuraman and Riley, 1997, p. 232; Parasuraman, 2000, p. 246). Research has revealed that the use of automated systems has changed the basic characteristics of the cognitive demands and responsibility of the human operator of systems (Parasuraman and Riley, 1997, p. 232; Bainbridge, 1983, pp. 775-6).
