ABSTRACT

Only once does Domenico Bernini’s biography of his father explicitly acknowledge Gianlorenzo’s inability to complete a work.1 In the “description” of the “The Statue of Truth” (Figure 2.1) Domenico mentions that this statue, “depicted in marble” as “a most beautiful woman,” ought to have been paired with a figure of Time “in the act of revealing Truth.” Yet the statue of Time was never made.
