ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on media in the Russian Federation attempt to report on the Russian War on Terrorism. An essential role and theme for the media is the appearance of consensus and unity in society. Various media organizations, both Russian and international, have re-evaluated their stance in the wake of the attacks and they report on terrorism, when it is involving hostages. The problem of ensuring media responsibility and a flow of correct information from the mass media was raised by Sergei Ivanov on the Russian Press Day. Putin sends a message to the through a brief statement, which demonstrates that the issue is perhaps on the political agenda. Although the authorities are aware of the potential for harnessing the assumed properties of the mass media for their purposes during the struggle against terrorism, they are equally aware that it is possible for the terrorists to manipulate and utilize the mass media to their own advantage too.
