ABSTRACT

The term the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) gives an impression of a worldwide and homogenous armed struggle against terrorism and terrorists. Terrorism and insurgency involves the contestation of political power through the perception of eroding or accumulating legitimacy. Mass media play a crucial role in many respects during the course of an armed conflict and therefore come under much scrutiny from the various factors, including the authorities and the terrorists/insurgents. The attitude and behavior of the political power to terrorism is reflected through the mass media and in their relations with journalists. The mass media should act in the capacity of publicizing the state agenda and objectives. Due to the politicised nature of modern conflict, especially terrorism campaigns, and military success is being measured more in political terms, and politics is realized through information, which ties the importance of the mass media to the state.
