ABSTRACT

The idea of culture has been used in anthropology for a long time to describe the values, mindset and informal rules which govern the behaviour of people in different communities and nations. While anthropologists usually talk about pre-industrialised communities, the term was adopted by business thinkers more recently to describe the characteristic behaviour of workgroups and complete business organisations. Organisation culture is described by Schein as ‘the learned shared tacit assumptions on which people base their daily behaviour – and is popularly thought of as “the way we do things around here”’. 1
