ABSTRACT

The stories within this book are stories about groups of people learning together and mobilising. As noted within the Introduction to this book, the collective of authors come from a diverse range of practice fields and disciplinary traditions – including community development, activism, feminism and conflict transformation. Their mobilising may be concerned with community building or it may be targeting direct action or resistance. The content of the learning is equally diverse: conflict resolution, environmental sustainability, and financial literacy, reproductive health, understanding social marginalisation, nonviolent action and so forth. What are common to all the stories are processes of community-based education and training – understood as social learning – that is integral to the group taking collective action, understood as mobilisation processes.
