ABSTRACT

Political skill was found to be positively linked with reputation and a good reputation is positively linked with good job performance. There is a fine line between relationship building and political influencing. While both activities involve many of the same skills, political activity is undertaken with the clear intention of influencing the other part to perform some action. As a project leader the question is not whether to indulge in political activity, but how much political activity should be undertaken and what kind of activity is appropriate. The nature of the political activity within an organisation is one clear indicator of the organisation's culture. All leaders need to build strong influence networks. This is particularly important for leaders of complex projects. Effective political behaviour involves a vast range of experience skill and knowledge. Negative political activity can be culturally determined or related to personal needs, like saving face or personal gain.
