ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the interview of some project leaders. They were proud of their successful projects and pleased to talk about them. Almost without exception, these leaders possessed very high degrees of humility, and it seems that this was an important part of what made them effective leaders for the very complex projects with which they had been involved. Although there are many references to humility in management and leadership, articles tend to be either anecdotal or polemical. Nevertheless, these leaders came across as assured individuals with a very clear sense of self and strong levels of self-confidence. Ego and arrogance represent a fine line for leaders to tread. Recently, a number of examinations of humility as a personal attribute have appeared in the psychological literature that has associated humility with virtue or personal strength. In its positive sense, the word humility might be associated with a sense of security, an accurate view of self, and a non-defensive, open attitude.
