ABSTRACT

While leadership seems to be as old as the human species, its reach in terms of the leader’s role seems to expand in the living world and metaphorically speaking in the physical world. One could poetically say that the leader of the solar system is the sun or the leader of the atom is its nucleus and so on. In the natural world, things can get closer to our experience with leadership, so we easily identify the leader of the beehive as the queen bee or the leader of a wolf pack as the alpha male or female and so on. In this chapter we will provide an evolutionary and historical approach to leadership by discussing the emergence of leadership and presenting select cases of well-known historical leadership gures.
