ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author charges the said Captain carefully to see that good discipline—Christian, civic and military—is established among the men on board his ship. The said Captain delivered the Holy Cross he was carrying to the Father Commissary, Fray Martin de Munilla, who with his religious was waiting to receive it. The two religious, namely Father Mateo de Bascones and Father Antonio Quintero, celebrated Low Mass, during which the majority of the men of the fleet received Holy Communion, and at about ten in the morning the Father Commissary, Fray Martin de Munilla, vested to celebrate High Mass. A very fine largebower of branches was made, within which the religious prepared and very suitably arranged a chapel and altarwhere the Office might be recited and the Holy Sacrificeof the Mass celebrated. All the religious who were priests said Mass and a large number of the men received Holy Communion.
