ABSTRACT

Henry Chadwick’s achievement was to help to clarify the ways in which the writing of the ‘history’ of theology can be a mode of ‘doing theology’. It was his presumption that the continuities and discontinuities in the history of the faith and life of the Church theology are not merely episodes in a story but weave the very fabric of the faith. As an ecumenist and ecumenical theologian he felt a responsibility to make the method ‘work’ in applied as well as academic theology so that the one faith in the future united Church will also be manifestly the faith of the Church through the ages.
