ABSTRACT

Written and performed during the same period as Believe as You List, The Soddered Citizen is another play which survived the early modem period only in manuscript. The Massinger text is the allowed copy but that of The Soddered Citizen includes unusual features which I believe demonstrate its function as a working script used for discussion among the actors prior to performance. While the exact nature of the text remains doubtful because the last pages are missing, it provides material which can illuminate the early modern transition from page to stage. 1
