ABSTRACT

Once Lowin and Taylor became Housekeepers of the Globe there can be no serious doubt that the two of them led company policy. Their power, as key administrators and star performers, to veto performance of any play argues persuasively for their capacity to decide the nature of the repertory. On the other hand, it is important to remember the co-operative nature of the company which is underlined by the fact that all payments and notifications to the company include at least two names, usually Lowin and Taylor, but with Swanston as an additional or alternative name, so that most significant actions appear to be a matter of consensus among the sharers. This is a facet of the King's Men's operation which will be discussed in connection with The Soddered Citizen in Chapter 8.
