ABSTRACT

Tyrwhitt introduces her Geddessian line of modern planning thought into their content as well as into broader discussions on urban design sponsored by the school. Tyrwhitt plays a major role in a partnership between Harvard and the UN to establish a new school of planning in Indonesia, thereby facilitating the internationalization of the university and planning education. Sert appoints in 1953 to serve as chair of a newly merged Department of City Planning and Landscape Architecture. Tyrwhitt helped Sert organize a meeting of potential North American CIAM groups from NY, Boston, Toronto, and Philadelphia, to discuss the work done at CIAM 9, which Tyrwhitt was bringing to Paris. Sert convened the event "in view of the great interest in urban renewal and urban redevelopment and the continued growth of cities in this country". The Round Table prompted an interesting exchange between Tyrwhitt and Kevin Lynch, then an associate professor of city planning at MIT.
