ABSTRACT
Islands, geographically speaking, are masses of land surrounded by water. Culturally speaking, they are the homes of distinct civilisations; some considerably influenced by outsiders, others less so. Ecologically speaking, they are the repositories of endemic and outstanding species, preserving high biodiversity values.
