ABSTRACT

The theme of isolation also has historical roots and can be found in the functional organisation of the productive spaces; in fact, it is extremely interesting to note that, beginning in the eleventh century, there was a clear structural analogy (Ortu, 1998) between the productive unit of the upper class, the domus, and the peasant village, organised on the farm model. The productive unit, in both cases, was self-sufficient, as physical isolation entailed the necessity to produce all that was essential to survive in order not to expect anything from the outside world (Le Lannou, 1979).
