ABSTRACT

A good deal of uncertainty surrounds both the identity and the date of Probus/ Proba, the author of some surviving commentaries dealing with parts of Aristotle’s Organon. In the past, the starting point for any discussion of his date has been the passage in the verse catalogue of Syriac authors by ‘Abdisho‘ of Soba (d.1318), who wrote: ‘Ibas and Kumi and Probus translated from Greek to Syriac the books of the Interpreter [that is, Theodore of Mopsuestia] and the writings of Aristo(tle).’
