ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the common challenges to implementing integrated assurance. It analysis implementation challenges also includes the work of a focused study on integrated assurance involving some 24 member companies of the Insurance Internal Audit Group (IIAG). The chapter refers to the perception of the Chief Executive Officer of Police Mutual Group, UK's largest affinity insurance company, Stephen Mann, whose vision of a prosperous modern mutual organisation encouraged innovation in the way governance and business transformation is achieved. Assessing the significance of risks and effectiveness of controls and risk mitigation plans is integral to any risk management process. A champion at the top is necessary to provide visible support and leadership for the implementation project. This is particularly important for initiatives such as integrated assurance that are enterprise wide. Coordination is essential to integrated assurance as it involves drawing together the efforts of risk management across the organisation.
