ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the suggested conceptualisations of spatial organisation within Asian regions, and combines the spatial focus of economic geography with the firm perspective in management science. It provides some explanations for recent spatial and organisational transitions in the electronics industry of the Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) based on data from two company surveys and qualitative interviews of electronics firms in Hong Kong (HK) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD). By taking both strands of research into account, the chapter positions itself at the interface of global-local dynamics of global production networks (GPNs) and the interrelated spatial and organisational transition within a specific region. It discusses conceptual underpinnings adapted to the Chinese context, and introduces the data and methods used for empirical analysis. The chapter presents results on issues of spatial and organisational transition, and derives some conclusions on policy recommendations and further research perspectives.
