ABSTRACT

This chapter translates the observations in the cities and regions analysed to general conclusions and recommendations. Looking at the geographic reach of industrial tourism, it concludes that regional target groups are most relevant, particularly if the ambition is to change the image of the industry as employer and responsible citizen. The chapter discusses the benefits in terms of income and image for city and enterprise, and the convergence of interests between public and private sectors. It explains any data that demonstrate benefits for local economies, only some indications that industrial tourism generates income or helps to improve the image of cities and regions. To conclude, our international comparative research makes clear that industrial tourism can produce benefits in terms of income and image for cities and their industries. In the Netherlands 'industrial tourism' has developed into a common notion for visiting operational firms.
