ABSTRACT

The examination of Indigenous images and symbols in the Catholic Church has taken us to multiple places and through multidisciplinary fields. Interview consultants revealed conflicting emotions regarding the misuse of images for both Natives and Catholics, and yet their confusion and uncertainty emanated from knowledge and understanding of both belief systems. Although Trickster displays and is capable of fantastic feats, he also is the bearer of cautionary tales. Trickster is embedded in oral histories, beliefs, actions, and expectations of native Peoples into the present day. There is no linearity, convenience, or simplicity to the Trickster. Trickster's art and artifice is most acute when he is out 'just going along', and, just as in stories, we might laugh and walk away, or we might choose a path with new degrees of resistance and knowledge for what it means to be human and to learn from the stories that he chooses to tell.
