ABSTRACT

A recurring theme of this book is the impact of national contexts on the inclusion and exclusion of young adults of immigrant background. As should be evident by now, these national contexts differ in terms of several social and economic aspects, yet share significant traits by way of being post-industrial European countries facing the challenges of integration and ethnic relations. As young adults of immigrant background meet various conditions of being included and excluded in different arenas throughout Europe, it is crucial to discuss what mechanisms are local – grounded in the national culture, state policies or a specifically structured economic region – and what seem to be more general patterns of exclusion and inclusion.
