ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on East, South and South East Asia and covers the following areas: reviewing major demographic trends in this region; defining active aging and briefly tracing its theoretical development; and discussing policy options to support active and dignified aging in Asia with a focus on financial and care support. According to the World Health Organization, active ageing is the process of optimising opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. Active ageing allows people to realise their potential for physical, social and mental well- being throughout the life course and to participate in society, while providing them with adequate protection, security and care when needed. Therefore, active and dignified ageing aims to extend healthy life expectancy and quality of life for all people as they age. The Policy Framework recognises that there are numerous and diverse determinants associated with active ageing.
