The way that human factors and ergonomics (HF/E) ts within an organization and interacts with other organizations has a strong inuence on the practice of HF/E. In this chapter, we consider four broad contexts of HF/E practice via interviews with 17 of the practitioners who have contributed to this book. We consider four organizational contexts: External consultancy; working in producers, manufacturers, and service providers; working in universities and research institutes; and working in governments (including regulators) and intergovernmental organizations. The practitioners reect on the economic, organizational, social, and personal aspects of HF/E practice in these four contexts.
