ABSTRACT

The architecture of incarceration presents particular and unique challenges to the architect. Hutchison, Locke and Monk (HLM)has always believed that architecture is important to everyone, but in the context of social facilities and the unique challenges inherent in custodial accommodation it possesses a special importance. HLM's work has included all project stages from the development of the brief and feasibility studies, through concept and master planning, to detailed design, construction information and site technical support. HLM's ethos puts the client's requirements and aspirations at the centre of their design approach. Good design creates a positive and healthy environment which promotes the physical and psychological safety and of offenders and staff. A prison should have an internal environmental quality that has an intrinsic therapeutic value. HLM are at the forefront of achieving sustainability in custodial projects, evolving integrated cell heating and ventilation systems, giving optimal environmental conditions and levels of individual control and energy efficiency.
