Previous studies on early Byzantine populations indicate a mean age at death of around 40-45 years for males and 30-35 years for females.6 ese gures do not change considerably during the middle Byzantine period (Figure 2.2). e lower average age at death for females can be explained primarily in terms of the risks associated with complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
