ABSTRACT

A community is not just a group of people bounded by geographical links, such as a village, town or district, but also includes those brought together, for example, by lifestyle, by religion, by hobby, or by interest. A community often pursues a common goal, concern or interest on an entirely voluntary basis. Community can be many things. Its parts are separate human beings when viewed in one way but they are also interconnected and interdependent and they often have similar values and aims. A crowd or established group has a life of its own, apart from the life of each member. That is, a community is not just the sum of the individuals who make it up, but something more than that. Community implies that those inside are somehow similar to each other but different from others. It creates a bond between some people and excludes others. Thus community implies and creates a boundary between us and them, between those inside the group and those outside.
