ABSTRACT
This chapter gathers together several items concerning diplomatic practices in the Hellenistic period which can be dealt with relatively briefl y. One of these practices, royal marriages, has been examined in the previous chapter because of its length, and the issue of the longevity of peace treaties has been discussed in Chapter 1 . A further consideration is that, in one case discussed here – the relationship of the kings with cities – it is not entirely certain that ‘diplomacy’ is the right term, though messengers and envoys did get exchanged. Two other items, ‘summit’ meetings and the diplomatic recognition of new states, are fairly minor matters, so their consideration becomes too brief to merit chapters of their own. Finally, there is a section considering the work of the envoys.
