ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how a concept of BrainSmart Leaders can apply the Brain Principles which build trust and confidence within their Grass Roots teams. In The BrainSmart Leader, published by Gower in 1999, Tony Buzan, Tony Dottino and Richard Israel introduced the concept that leaders need to learn how to inspire and build enthusiasm within their workforce to ignite the endless flow of creativity which exist within each employee. The brains of the departmental staff used the negative inputs from the meetings to create new links and associations. When Jean Turcotte became a Nurse Manager responsible for 100 nurses in the Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Florida Hospital in Orlando, he had the opportunity to embrace the journey toward "Magnet Status". The concept of Magnet matched Jean's philosophy of leadership. An active Nursing Practice Council (NPC) was already in place and had a good level of motivation but lacked organization, business skills and, to some degree, purpose.
