ABSTRACT

Resource scheduling is apparently a complex subject because it has to deal with a large number of variables. But if this is approached like a mathematical problem in which the variables are solved one by one, the process becomes relatively simple. However, it does require suitable software and it must be carried out by someone with appropriate skills and training. The most suitable place in which to establish this function usually be in a project or programme support office. This chapter considers scheduling resources for a single project. Resource scheduling used to be carried out by a dedicated planner spending many hours with an adjustable wall board on which project tasks were represented by horizontal strips. This, in effect, was an adjustable Gantt chart, where the strips representing the tasks could be moved back or forwards sideways to delay or accelerate the start of the tasks.
