ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on empathy in project management, Lindsay Scott would like to narrate a story about what happened to her a little earlier in her career. The relationship between self-awareness and empathy can be demonstrated using a model called the Johari Window. Empathy requires all three dimensions: perspective taking, emotional contagion and empathic concern to function. In response to growing instances of terrorism and the resulting demand for hostage negotiation, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation needed to find a way to influence the behaviour of hostage-takers. The Behavioural Change Stairway Model (BCSM) is important for author's purposes because it gives them a model to see precisely how empathy fits into a project managers arsenal. It is a precursor that leads directly to the behavioural changes he or she may wish to elicit in stakeholders, vendors or project team members.
