ABSTRACT

I personally approached Mary in front of the post office in Northington. I visited her

later on that day in her one bedroom flat on a large council estate nearby. Her simply

furnished flat was gloomy because the curtains were drawn and the bare light bulb

was not strong. Mary was white, 21 years old, and had a three-year-old boy and

an eight-months-old daughter, who played in the same room where our interview

took place.
